Christmas in New Orleans: Fun, Festive and Safe

Christmas in New Orleans is a magical and special time here. There are certain emotions brought out in people that exude happiness and joy throughout the city. There are events throughout the month leading up to the New Year that only New Orleans can boast, making this city one of the most exciting places to be in December. As a precaution, it is important to note that with any influx of people and shopping, it also makes this a time of year a time to be extra cautious of scam, thieves and drivers.

Holiday Events in New Orleans

You don’t want to miss out on all the fun and exciting holiday events that are happening in New Orleans this time of year. Being a historically Catholic city, Christmas is a big part of the events. Additionally, you’ll find activities for the whole family, whether you are a resident of the Greater New Orleans area, or you are visiting from out of town. One of the most famous activities to bring the whole family to is the Celebration in the Oaks at City Park. With its magical light displays and activities for the children, this is a must-see. Running from Thanksgiving through New Year’s Eve, Celebration in the Oaks offers fun for the whole family. City Park’s oak trees are covered in decorative lights, the City Park train and carousel are both open for families, and Storyland is open and lit up beautifully for all to see. Tickets are available in advance on City Park’s website for $8 per adult, children under 3 are free, and Friends of City Park have free admission as well. The amusement park rides are available for an additional ticket purchase.

NOLA ChristmasFest at Christmas in the District along Convention Center Boulevard opened on Friday, December 12th and features light-wrapped palm trees, Santa pulled by alligators, live entertainment, a gingerbread house competition, and moreholiday themed! The Roosevelt Waldorf Astoria Hotel is one of New Orleans most iconic settings for Christmas. It is really an entire block of lights and is open to the public for FREE.

New Orleans Non-Christmas Holiday Events

New Orleans is home to a diverse community, so the city celebrates all holidays throughout the year. The Jewish Community Center has their own Hanukkah Celebration on December 14th, hosting Israeli musician David Broza, and serving latkes next to other Hannukah treats.

The Menorah Lights at the Riverwalk is a free event on the Mississippi River on December 16th from 5:30-7:30p. The event will feature another Israeli musician, Yoel Sharabi, in addition to a hot latke bar, a dreidel house kids activity center, face painting, a menorah, dreidels and traditional gelt. This is an event not to be missed.

Remember to Be Alert This Holiday Season!

With all the excitement in New Orleans, Crescent City Law would like to remind you to be careful. While you are out at the events and activities with your family it is important to be alert. Some of the things you should watch out for include:

  • Parking lots: make sure that whether you are parking for an event around the city, or even a shopping mall, you park in a well-lit area. As many shoppers are out and about, there are also those who want to be a Grinch. Be alert as you walk to your car, whether you have your shopping bags with you or just a purse. You do not want to be a victim of theft.
  • Credit card fraud: whether you are making a purchase or a donation to a charitable organization, be aware of who you are giving your credit card information to. There are some scams out there that pose as non-profits asking for money. When handing over your credit card, be aware of credit card skimming machines. These types of machines will collect your credit card information to be used at a later time. In order to minimize your risk, use your credit card as a credit card and not a debit card where you can.
  • Drinking and driving: While the holidays are a joyful time and there are a lot of parties to be attend, it is not worth a DWI. If you plan to drink at any point while you are out, do not attempt to drive home. If you can, plan to use a Taxi, Uber, RTA bus or streetcar. A DWI can cost you fines, loss of license, and even jail-time.
